Comment on Music for Sunday, 3rd June 2018: 1st after Trinity, Year B by Nigel http://ceciliaslist.org/music-for-sunday-3rd-june-2018-1st-after-trinity-year-b/#comment-261 Fri, 01 Jun 2018 10:41:21 +0000 http://ceciliaslist.org/?p=548#comment-261 A whole week of wonderful suggestions. Thank you.
If you don’t quite have time to learn all of them, I can offer a two-part song by Helen Williams about vocation, quoting specifically Elizabeth’s words at the Visitation, “How can it be, the mother of my Lord should come to me?” The score is here: http://canossa.co.uk/HowCanItBe.html
Or there is a SoundCloud recording here: https://soundcloud.com/helenwilliamsatcanossa/how-can-it-be

Thanks again for the Corpus Christi suggestions. I was particularly struck by Andrea Ramsey’s tender treatment of ‘miserere’ in Ave Verum Corpus.

Nigel.

Comment on 11th February 2018: Sunday Next before Lent, Year B by Kathryn http://ceciliaslist.org/11th-february-2018-sunday-next-before-lent-year-b/#comment-71 Thu, 08 Feb 2018 23:19:57 +0000 http://ceciliaslist.org/?p=461#comment-71 Thanks for the suggestion, Nigel. There is an “Easter” seasonal section on the website for anyone working in advance, but I do still want to make week-by-week suggestions where I can, and encourage people to compose or highlight pieces where there are gaps. At least these will get much easier after the first three years!

Your project is very much appreciated.
What a lot of collegiate choirs do is work by terms, a few months in advance. If you leapt straight to after Easter, you could make suggestions for a season, not necessarily for every single week. That would give organists a chance to discuss plans with chaplains and vicars and rehearse their choirs in readiness. Save your week by week suggestions for particular favourites. But please don’t wear yourself out; and save some time to keep composing.
Nigel.

Comment on Four ways to make chapel and cathedral choirs more inclusive by Enya Doyle http://ceciliaslist.org/four-ways-to-make-cathedral-chapel-choirs-inclusive/#comment-42 Sat, 23 Dec 2017 14:23:52 +0000 http://ceciliaslist.org/?p=397#comment-42 Thanks for this, Emma! Just 2 things:

1) 36 of the 42 cathedrals include girls in the choristership line up in some way, not 24.

2) Whilst Carris’ appointment at St Paul’s is probably unprecedented in the history of the cathedral itself (especially considering it is one of the 6 with no girl choristers), it was not unprecedented in the wider cathedral sphere with Durham, York, Peterborough, Newcastle and Exeter all being examples of places where women have held choral scholarships and Lay Clerkships.

This is important, and it is something I am working on. We do have a piece by Hannah Kendall in this list but I’d definitely like more, so if you know of any more Black women writing church music please let me know.

Even the many men who are African Church music composers, are scarcely acknowledged.
